We designed and installed this large scale green roof system, which helps to reduce runoff from the building while complimenting the natural ecosystem

The plan for this 3,000 sq ft roof was to reduce runoff to the creek down hill from the house, help the house blend into the landscape and, provide habitat for birds. The design includes sweeps of little bluestem, deschampsia, allium and various sedums, providing layers of color and texture which will be enhanced over time by the prevailing wind blowing seed across the rooftop landscape. A spiral staircase gives visitors access to an observation platform.

The growing medium is 2″ to 6″ deep giving the plants varying opportunities to extend their height, giving the installation the appearance of a varied topography. The planting was a combination of seeds, cuttings and plugs. Soft mounds of blue hispanicum and fiery tufts of fuldeglut provide color.  As the grass grows over the parapet, it will remind people coming down the driveway of what lies on top of the house.
